BECOMING A SISTER

Becoming a Sister can be one of the most significant events of your life.

From the moment you become a Sister, you will feel immediate Sisterly love.

Where do you begin?

QUALIFICATIONS 

Membership in the Order of the Eastern Star Chapters is open to women 18 years of age or older — regardless of race, color, or religion. Our membership requirements are very clear:

• You must be of good character and reputation.

• You must have specific Masonic affiliation (must be wife, daughter, legally adopted daughter, mother, widow, stepmother, sister, stepsister, half-sister, granddaughter, or stepdaughter of a Master Mason as well as grandmother, great granddaughter, niece or daughter-in-law, mothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and daughters of sisters or brothers of affiliated Master Masons)

• You must believe in a Supreme Being.
  

• You’ll have to provide evidence of living a positive life through references from at least one Master Mason or Order of the Eastern Star Sister and three other people.

THE FIRST STEPS
Start the process by completing a questionnaire for membership.  Petitioners are also required to complete volunteer projects and fundraisers. 

Your questionnaire answers are read in a Chapter meeting and referred to an Investigation Committee composed of members of the Chapter.  Shortly thereafter the members of the Investigation Committee will contact you to set up a time for a home visit.  This is done (1) to ask a few simple questions, (2) to provide you with an opportunity to meet some of the Chapter members, (3)  to provide you an opportunity to ask and recieve answers to any additional questions you might have and (4) to verify your Masonic affiliation.  At a later time, you will also meet with the entire Chapter for a question/answer session (meet & greet). 

After the home visit and meet & greet, the information that the Investigation Committee receives will be reported to the Worthy Matron who presides over the Chapter.  If all of the information is in order, the report of the Investigation Committee will be submitted to the Chapter members at a Chapter meeting and a secret ballot (vote) will be taken.  If the vote is favorable, you will have been elected to recieve the Degrees of the Order of the Eastern Star.  The Chapter Secretary will notify you of the results of the balloting and arrange for you to be intiated into the Order. 

Please note, all Chapters are different and the Investigation process varies from Chapter to Chapter; District to District; Jurisdiction to Jurisdiction.  There is no set length of time for the investigation process.  Initiations will be scheduled at the first possible date to accommodate the Chapter and it's new members.

THE INITIATORY PROCESS

Our Fraternal Order's private nature sometimes creates misconceptions. We are not a secret organization but we are an organization that has secrets, however through our “initiation ceremonies” you will learn that we are a moral institution whose tenets are Charity, Friendship, Morality, and Sisterly Love. The Order of the Eastern Star teaches us to practice charity and benevolence, and to revere ordinances of — but not replace — anyone’s religion. Quite simply, our Fraternal Order exists to make us Women Led By Insight, Power & Exquisiteness to Achieve Excellence .

Within the Order we strive to emulate the exemplary lives of Five Heroines from the Bible. Each Heroine guides us on the path of life to the mold us into women of honor and examples for the next generation to glean from.

To convey our teachings, we use ritual, ceremony, drama, lectures, and sometimes even musical accompaniment.  Upon the completion of the initiatory process, you’ll become a Sister of the Order of the Eastern Star, and be eligible for all that the Order has to offer you, which includes:

• Worldwide Sisterhood (and brotherhood)
• Fellowship
• Networking
• Charity, relief and bereavement
• Meaningful community service
• Camaraderie within our membership
